Residents of Innayin Community in Oyo State were thrown into panic on Thursday following the invasion of a wild elephant that left one person dead and another missing.
The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on April 23, 2026, prompted a swift response from the Oyo State Police Command after a distress call was received.
Police operatives, working alongside local vigilantes and hunters, immediately mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a 45-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani, in a nearby bush. Authorities said the victim sustained injuries consistent with an animal attack. His remains have since been evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.
During ongoing search operations, another resident, identified as 50-year-old Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, was reported missing after reportedly encountering the same elephant. Efforts are currently underway to locate him.
The police have reassured residents of Innayin and neighbouring communities that the situation is under control, with measures in place to prevent further casualties. Residents have been strongly advised to stay away from the affected area and report any sightings of the animal to security agencies.
The Command also noted that relevant authorities, including the National Park Service, are being engaged to provide expert support in safely managing the situation, while ensuring compliance with wildlife conservation regulations.
