The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and released images of Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, the officer allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting of popular Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, known widely as Igbo-Jah.

Protesting youths

Mba, celebrated for his contributions to Igbo culture through his Ogene music, was reportedly shot on Friday evening outside the headquarters of the Police Anti-Cult Tactical Squad after a visit. Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, though preliminary reports suggest that Inspector Joseph discharged his rifle, hitting Mba.

Following the incident, Mba was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His body has been moved to the morgue for preservation and an autopsy. The police investigation is ongoing as the community mourns his loss, sparking calls for accountability in this tragic case.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mba, Mourns

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has directed a full investigation into the killing of Okezie Mba. Reacting to the incident on social media, the governor expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and emphasized his commitment to ensuring justice.

“I received with a deep sense of grief the untimely death of Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, under very tragic circumstances. It is a huge loss for us as Ndigbo in general and Ndi Enugu in particular,” he wrote.

Residents of Enugu took to the streets on Saturday in protest over Mba’s death, demanding accountability for the killing. Hundreds of enraged locals marched to the anti-cult squad headquarters and attempted to set the building on fire, prompting police to respond with tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Protesters blocked roads in parts of the state capital, including Onu Asata, where they set up bonfires and chanted angrily, expressing their sorrow and frustration over the musician’s death.
