The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, has announced the suspension of the indefinite strike action earlier embarked upon by its staff unions—Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP).

The strike, which commenced on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, was necessitated by issues including fractional and delayed salary payments, unpaid allowances, promotion arrears, and the inability of the College Management to augment the monthly subvention to meet full salary obligations, despite a 25% increment by the Oyo State Government in January 2025.

In a press release signed by the chairmen of the three unions—Comrade Tajudeen Adeyemo (NASU), Comrade Oyediran S. O. (SSANIP), and Comrade Tiamiyu M. B. (ASUP)—the unions noted that their members had endured extreme financial hardship, leading to a significant drop in morale and productivity.

The suspension of the strike follows the recent inauguration of Governing Council members for all tertiary institutions in Oyo State by Governor Seyi Makinde on Friday, July 11, 2025. During the inauguration, the governor acknowledged the inadequacy of current subvention levels and assured stakeholders of his plan to increase funding in the coming days. A proposed meeting involving key stakeholders—including the heads of institutions, Governing Council Chairmen, Commissioner of Education Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, Chairman JAC Oyo State, and Professor A.O. Omole (Chairman, LAUTECH Governing Council)—is expected to chart the way forward.

The unions cited the governor’s listening and workers-friendly disposition, as well as personal appeals from the Commissioner for Education and the newly inaugurated Governing Council members, as reasons for suspending the strike. Academic and non-academic activities are scheduled to resume fully on Monday, July 21, 2025.

The unions expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for his timely intervention and reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful and constructive engagement. They also reiterated the urgent need for an upward review of the institution’s subvention, warning that the current financial situation remains unsustainable even with internally generated revenue (IGR) support.

They called on the government to act swiftly to stabilize the institution and restore dignity to the working environment at OYSCATECH.
