In a demonstration of support and encouragement, the Oyo State government has rewarded medal-winning athletes participating in the ongoing National Sports Festival, reaffirming its commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, represented by Hon. Yusuf Adebisi, Chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Youth and Sports, met with members of Team Oyo to commend their performances and inspire them to aim higher.
Hon. Adebisi praised the athletes for their outstanding achievements, noting that their dedication aligns with the vision of Governor Seyi Makinde to promote excellence in sports.
“Recite the anthem before your events to remind yourselves that you are here to set the pace as Oyo contingents,” he said, encouraging the athletes to uphold the state’s identity as pioneers and pace-setters.
As part of the visit, medalists were instantly rewarded for their efforts. Gold medalists received ₦20,000 per medal, including members of the victorious female darts doubles team. Silver medalists in weightlifting and taekwondo (Poomsae) events were awarded ₦10,000 each, while bronze medalists received ₦5,000 per athlete.
The event was attended by key stakeholders in Oyo sports, including the General Manager of the Oyo State Sports Council, Mr. Tunde Ajibike; former Chairman of the Council, Gbenga Ayinde AdéWùsì (popularly known as Arole); and Secretary of the Oyo State Football Association, Mr. Kehinde Ojelowo.
The state’s reward initiative reflects its unwavering support for athletes and underscores the value placed on excellence, discipline, and patriotism in the sporting arena.
