Ahead of Saturday’s bye-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State has called on electorates to reject political parties and candidates linked to electoral violence and intimidation, urging them instead to support leaders with proven integrity.
State Chairman of the party, Michael Okunlade, made the appeal in a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday, stressing the need for a peaceful and credible process.
The seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Musiliudeen Akinremi, popularly known as “Jagaban,” a two-term member of the House of Representatives who passed away in 2024 after a brief illness.
Okunlade said recent international attention on Nigeria’s electoral conduct should serve as a wake-up call to voters to break free from a history of bloodshed, ballot snatching, and intimidation.
“We must use this election to send a strong message that violence has no place in our democracy. This is the time to vote for candidates who stand for peace, transparency, and service to the people,” he said.
The SDP chairman emphasised that the party has consistently run issue-based campaigns without resorting to thuggery, noting that all its candidates in the state have signed a peace accord pledging to abide by the rules of the game.
He urged security agencies to remain impartial during the polls and ensure voters are protected from harassment or coercion.
“Any attempt to manipulate the process or turn a blind eye to acts of violence would damage Nigeria’s image internationally. We are calling on the people to stand firm and vote with their conscience,” he added.
Okunlade concluded by encouraging residents of Ibadan North to see the bye-election as an opportunity to choose leaders who will prioritise development over personal or party interests.
