The Oyo State Internal Revenue Service (OYBIRS) has cautioned traders, artisans and the general public against purchasing fake tax stickers allegedly being sold in its name for the 2026 tax year.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Board disclosed that it had uncovered individuals circulating stickers and letters purportedly backed by OYBIRS, claiming the documents provide tax cover for 2026. The management dismissed the claims, stressing that no such authorisation was granted.
“It has come to our notice at the Board of Internal Revenue Service that various stickers are being sold to unsuspecting members of the public, purporting to cover them for 2026 tax,” the statement read. “The Board has not authorised anyone to sell any sticker.”
The agency further clarified that no informal tax activities should be carried out in the state until the Oyo State House of Assembly passes a new law on taxes and levies. The proposed law is expected to replace the 1998 Act signed by the military government, which the Supreme Court of Nigeria nullified in 2025.
OYBIRS urged residents to disregard any individuals using the Board’s name for unauthorised collections, emphasising that all legitimate payments must be made only into approved government accounts.
The statement was signed by the management of OYBIRS.
