The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a counterfeit currency syndicate and recovered 89 pieces of suspected fake €100 notes with a total face value of €8,900.
The arrests followed a patrol operation carried out by operatives of the Command around the Labo–Wesley area of Oyo State.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the suspects were intercepted on September 1, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m. while travelling on a motorcycle.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the 89 pieces of suspected counterfeit €100 notes.
The suspects were identified as Tijani Saheed, 50, who was allegedly found in possession of the suspected counterfeit currency; Oni Oladapo, 67, alleged to have supplied the money; Adebayo Saheed, 52, who was the second passenger on the motorcycle; and Hammed Karemu, 25, the motorcycle rider.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the involvement of each suspect were still being subjected to further investigation.
The Command said investigation into the matter led operatives to the location where the suspected counterfeit currency was allegedly purchased.
A forensic sweep of the premises reportedly resulted in the recovery of materials suspected to have been used in producing the counterfeit notes and the arrest of the alleged producer, bringing the total number of suspects arrested in connection with the case to six.
“All six suspects are currently in police custody and are cooperating with the investigation. Upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism.
He assured residents that the Command remained committed to dismantling criminal networks and protecting members of the public and legitimate businesses from economic and financial crimes.
