In a passionate plea for gender equality in politics, Hon. Bisi Oluranti, a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly has advocated for a significant increase in women’s participation in the political process.
Addressing attendees at the UN Women-organized workshop in collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, and with support from UN Women and the Government of Canada, Hon. Oluranti emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for women to thrive in the political arena.
The lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North state constituency added ” For too long, women have been underrepresented in the corridors of power,” she said. “It’s time for us to break down the barriers and ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear in the decision-making process.”
The event, which brought together key stakeholders from across the state, provided a platform for Hon. Bisi Oluranti to share her insights and experiences as a female legislator.
She highlighted the challenges women face in navigating the often male-dominated political landscape and called for concerted efforts to address the systemic biases and societal norms that hinder women’s political participation.
“We need to empower our women, to equip them with the necessary skills and resources, and to create more opportunities for them to assume leadership roles,” Hon Bisi Oluranti said. “Only then can we truly achieve inclusive and representative governance that reflects the diversity of our state.”
The event also featured panel discussions and interactive sessions, where participants discussed strategies to increase women’s involvement in politics, as well as the legislative and policy measures needed to support their political aspirations.
As the event concluded, Hon Bisi Oluranti’s call for greater women’s participation in politics resonated with the audience, who expressed their commitment to working towards a more gender-inclusive political landscape in Oyo State
