Oyo Governorship Not Reward for Legislative Incompetence, Adekanmbi Tells Alli

The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, has challenged Senator Sharafadeen Alli to present a comprehensive scorecard of his performance at the National Assembly, declaring that Oyo voters will not reward alleged legislative underperformance with elevation to the Agodi Government House.

Adekanmbi’s position was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Co-Director, Media and Publicity, Oyo State APM Campaign Council (OYSACC).

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The campaign organisation expressed concern that Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District, had continued to rely on references to political offices he previously occupied rather than highlighting measurable achievements from his current assignment at the Senate.

According to the APM campaign council, the senator’s emphasis on his political history raises questions about his legislative contributions and accomplishments capable of inspiring public confidence ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

It maintained that anyone seeking higher political responsibility must first demonstrate competence and excellence in their current office, stressing that leadership progression should be based on performance, accountability and measurable impact rather than political longevity or the number of positions previously occupied.

The organisation consequently challenged Alli to account for his stewardship in the Senate, particularly his legislative contributions, constituency projects, empowerment programmes and other development initiatives that have directly benefited the people of Oyo South.

“The people of Oyo State cannot be persuaded to reward underperformance with elevation. The question before the electorate is simple: if a senator cannot point to a compelling record of achievements while representing one senatorial district, apart from billboards, on what basis should he be entrusted with the responsibility of governing an entire state?” the statement queried.

The campaign council further argued that the governorship of Oyo State should not be regarded as a retirement benefit for political veterans or a consolation prize for individuals who have occupied public offices.

It said the position should be entrusted to individuals whose records demonstrate innovation, accountability, competence and effective service delivery.

The organisation also observed that several public office holders seeking higher political positions across the country were campaigning on the strength of visible projects, legislative achievements and interventions that had positively affected their constituents.

It therefore questioned why Alli had allegedly failed to make his Senate scorecard the centrepiece of his political engagements.

“What the people want to hear from Senator Alli is not a catalogue of offices previously occupied. They want to know what he has done with the mandate they entrusted to him.

“They want evidence of effective representation, transformative constituency projects, legislative achievements, youth empowerment programmes, economic interventions and development initiatives,” the statement added.

The APM campaign council described the 2027 governorship election as a referendum on competence, accountability and performance, insisting that political titles and historical affiliations could no longer substitute for tangible achievements.

It also presented Adekanmbi’s Roadmap for Continued Development as an alternative vision for the state, anchored on accountability, economic growth, infrastructure development, job creation and improved living standards.

The organisation maintained that the political debate ahead of the 2027 election should focus on ideas, performance and the capacity to deliver measurable results rather than a parade of previously occupied political offices.

It consequently challenged Alli to publicly present a comprehensive account of his Senate tenure and subject his performance to public scrutiny.

“Democracy demands accountability. Every elected representative must be prepared to account for his stewardship whenever he seeks renewed public confidence.

“The people of Oyo State deserve leaders who can defend their ambitions with verifiable achievements, not politicians who expect past titles to substitute for present performance,” the statement said.

The campaign council expressed confidence that Oyo voters would support Adekanmbi in 2027, citing what it described as his commitment to competence, effective leadership and measurable results.

The statement was signed by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Co-Director, Media and Publicity, Oyo State APM Campaign Council, and dated November 7, 2026.
