The Governor of Ekiti State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Biodun Oyebanji, has been re-elected for a second term after securing a landslide victory in Saturday’s governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyebanji winner of the poll in the early hours of Sunday after he defeated candidates of other political parties across all 16 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the result at about 3:00 a.m., the Chief Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Oladiji, said Oyebanji polled 319,224 votes to emerge victorious.
According to the results, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, came second with 40,543 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 12,872 votes.
Declaring the result, Oladiji said: “I, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the Ekiti State governorship election held on June 20, 2026. That Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
INEC disclosed that out of 988,252 registered voters, 384,940 were accredited to vote. The commission recorded 375,777 valid votes, 6,332 rejected votes, and a total of 382,109 votes cast.
Reacting to his victory, Governor Oyebanji described his re-election as a renewed call to service, saying the overwhelming mandate given to him by the people had placed a greater burden of responsibility on his shoulders.
“I have a proper understanding of the responsibility that this victory has placed on my shoulders. It is a responsibility of service—service to the people of Ekiti State. I want to assure our people that we will continue to serve them with courage, compassion, humility and the fear of God,” he said.
The governor thanked Ekiti residents for their support and confidence in his administration, assuring them of improved performance during his second term.
He stated that his government would remain committed to implementing its development agenda while remaining open to new ideas and emerging priorities capable of advancing the state’s growth and development.
“We have a development guide and we will continue to faithfully implement that plan. At the same time, if there are new issues or areas that require attention, we will review them and ensure they are accommodated.
“Our focus remains the comprehensive implementation of our development agenda for the benefit of all Ekiti people,” Oyebanji added.
The APC candidate’s victory consolidates his administration’s hold on power and gives him another four years to pursue his development programmes across the state.
