More reactions have continued to trail the safe rescue of the pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, commending the efforts of the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government and security agencies.
The organisations and political leader, in separate statements, described the rescue as a welcome development and a major relief to the victims’ families, the affected schools and residents of Oyo State.
The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists said the successful operation reflected the effectiveness of coordinated security efforts and urged authorities not to relent in addressing security challenges across the country.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, the council called on government to prioritise the welfare of the rescued pupils and teachers by providing medical attention, trauma counselling and rehabilitation to ease their recovery from the ordeal.
The union also advocated improved security around schools through regular patrols, stronger intelligence gathering and increased collaboration between communities and security agencies to prevent future attacks.
Similarly, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State Chapter, applauded the commitment of both the Federal and Oyo State Governments, as well as the professionalism displayed by security operatives in securing the victims’ release.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Omolola Alamu, the association noted that the rescue had restored hope to many families and underscored the importance of decisive leadership in responding to security threats.
NAWOJ stressed that beyond celebrating the successful operation, government should strengthen security in vulnerable schools, particularly in rural and border communities, while ensuring the rescued children and their families receive adequate psychosocial support.
The association further urged authorities to bring those behind the abduction to justice to discourage similar crimes and reassure the public of government’s resolve to combat insecurity.
Reacting to the development, Peter Obi described the children’s release as a moment of thanksgiving, expressing appreciation to security personnel and everyone who contributed to the successful rescue.
He, however, maintained that the recurring abduction of schoolchildren remained a serious concern, urging governments at all levels to strengthen the nation’s security architecture and create a safe environment where children can pursue education without fear.
The NDC presidential candidate congratulated the rescued pupils, their families, their schools and Nigerians on the positive outcome, while reiterating his belief that a better and safer Nigeria is achievable.
