In a significant step toward strengthening grassroots justice and reinforcing the rule of law, the Ondo State Government has commenced the process of appointing new Justices of the Peace (JPs).

This move, coming after more than a decade without fresh appointments, follows the approval of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and demonstrates his administration’s commitment to accessible and effective justice.

The announcement was made by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, during a public lecture at the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) Conference in Abuja. Speaking on the administration of criminal justice, he reiterated the state’s dedication to upholding the Supreme Court’s judgments and the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). Central to these reforms are the mandatory presence of legal practitioners during confessional statements and electronic recording to ensure fairness and transparency.

Dr. Ajulo stressed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration stands firm in its resolve to cultivate an environment where the rule of law reigns supreme in all government affairs. The Attorney General echoed the Governor’s powerful assertion that ‘after God comes the rule of law,’ underscoring its vital role in governance.

He emphasized the crucial role Justices of the Peace play in society. “As respected members of their communities, JPs serve as a bridge between the government and the people, attesting documents, witnessing affidavits, mediating disputes, and promoting peaceful coexistence. Their presence helps foster civic responsibility and ensures quicker access to basic justice, particularly at the local level.”

The rigorous selection process, now in advanced stages, is being coordinated by a high-powered committee within the Ministry of Justice. Candidates are drawn from across the state, including traditional, religious, and political figures, professionals, and other individuals with distinguished records of community service. Dr. Ajulo noted that all nominees are undergoing strict background checks by security agencies to preserve the integrity of the office.

“Interested individuals have begun collecting Expression of Interest forms from the Registry of the Ministry of Justice at the State Secretariat, Alagbaka, Akure. A specially constituted panel made up of technocrats and representatives of key security agencies is currently vetting the applicants to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are selected.” Dr. Ajulo.

At the official swearing-in ceremony, the Attorney General said, successful nominees will receive their warrant, insignia, seal and any other paraphanelia empowering them to undertake JP functions such as witnessing affidavits, attesting to documents, mediating disputes, standing as guarantors, and fostering peace within their communities.

“By law, the Governor may also confer on any Justice of the Peace certain powers of a Magistrate as relate to the maintenance of law and order, excluding the trial of cases or preliminary criminal inquiries.” He said.

Dr. Ajulo also assured that arrangements are in top gear to ensure a smooth and dignified inauguration ceremony, which will be attended by top government officials, legal professionals, traditional rulers, and stakeholders across the state, adding that the date will be announced soon.”

“This is another bold step in advancing Governor Aiyedatiwa’s vision for a progressive, just, and inclusive Ondo State, where governance is closer to the people and the rule of law is upheld at all levels.” Dr. Ajulo concluded.
