Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees NULGE has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to fulfill his promise on influencing the local government autonomous in the country.
The Union Vice President, Southwest Mr Oludare Faforo disclosed this at a Press conference in Ibadan.
Famofo noted that Part of President Mohammadu Buhari’s promise which made at the inception of his administration is consideration for local government autonomy in Nigeria
“One of the Promises of the president is local government autonomy and we believe that with the change mantra and agenda he should be able to use his political will to influence local government autonomy because it will enhance development at the grassroots.”
While decrying the attitude of state governors and House of Assemblies towards the development, Faforo said “Most of the governors do not want it, because they believe it will affect their influence on local government funds and finances and possible lost control of local governments in their state”
“They are conscious of political and financial implications of allowing local government to be autonomous, and that is why hey are afraid of granting supporting the agigations”
He also charge the state lawmakers to speed up actions on public hearing on the matter because it will afford them the opportunity of knowing the minds of the people and the urgent needs for direct participation in government at the grassroots.
The Union Leader maintained that NULGE will not relent in his bid to seek for autonomy for local government because it is the only way through which local government administration can be strengthen for effective delivery of dividends of democracy to the people and nation building.
Comrade Titi Sodo, Oyo state president of NULGE in his remarks said the agitation is not about local government staff but about every member of the society, ” it is about nation building and development, if our communities are developed the Nation will grow, and their will be output and economic growth”
