Nigeria’s pharmaceutical research community has recorded another major international breakthrough as the Community Pharmacists Assessment and Career Progression Institute (CPACPI) secured global recognition following the acceptance of two high-impact research abstracts for presentation at the 84th International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences scheduled to hold in Montreal, Canada, from August 30 to September 2, 2026.

Widely regarded as the world’s largest and most influential gathering of pharmacy professionals, the annual FIP Congress provides a strategic global platform for advancing pharmaceutical innovation, professional education, healthcare delivery, scientific collaboration, and workforce development across continents.

The latest achievement represents another significant milestone for Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector and further consolidates the growing international relevance of Nigerian community pharmacy practice.

The development also builds upon the momentum generated at the previous FIP Congress in Denmark, where Pharm. Ambrose Igwekamma Ezeh, National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), introduced the standardized CPACPI framework, which was subsequently adopted by the FIP Community Pharmacy Section — a landmark global recognition widely regarded as the first initiative of its kind.

According to the accepted presenters, Dr. Iyeseun Asieba, Board Chairman of CPACPI, and Pharm. Omokhafe Mary Ashore, National Secretary of ACPN, the recognition by the prestigious FIP body extends beyond academic accomplishment, emphasizing that it validates the ingenuity, resilience, and research capacity of Nigerian pharmacists on the global stage.

The abstracts were supervised by the Research and Publications Subcommittee under the leadership of Prof. Chukwuemeka Ubaka.

The researchers expressed excitement that locally generated data and grassroots-driven professional initiatives are now contributing meaningfully to global healthcare discussions, pharmaceutical policy development, and scientific advancement.

Notably, the accepted presentations align strongly with the official theme of the 84th FIP World Congress: “One Health, One Pharmacy, Bridging Science, Practice, and Education,” a theme designed to promote stronger integration between pharmaceutical science, clinical practice, healthcare systems, and professional education globally.

Leading the presentation lineup is a research paper titled, “The Implementation Gap: Perceived Barriers and External Threats to Community Pharmacists’ Participation in a Career Advancement Scheme in Nigeria,”* to be presented by Dr. Asieba, who serves as Chairperson of the CPACPI Board.

The study critically examines systemic barriers, institutional limitations, regulatory concerns, and external pressures affecting the participation of Nigerian community pharmacists in structured career advancement programmes. It further explores challenges limiting professional growth, competency enhancement, and sustainable workforce development within the sector.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Asieba described the acceptance as deeply rewarding, noting that the recognition demonstrates that both the challenges and innovative solutions emerging from Nigerian pharmacy practice possess global relevance and applicability.

Observers within the profession have described the CPACPI-driven initiatives championed by Dr. Asieba under the leadership of Pharm. Ambrose Ezeh as transformational reforms capable of reshaping community pharmacy practice not only in Nigeria but also across regions facing similar professional development and healthcare delivery challenges.
Complementing the first study is another accepted research work titled, “Beyond the Counter: Profiling the Early Adopters of a Career Progression Framework among Nigerian Community Pharmacists,” to be presented by Pharm. (Mrs.) Omokhafe Mary Ashore.

The research investigates the motivations, professional characteristics, behavioural patterns, and practice realities of pharmacists who embraced the CPACPI framework during its early implementation phase, while also providing data-driven insights into the evolving structure of community pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

Reacting to the international recognition, Pharm. Ashore described the development as both inspiring and encouraging, stressing that it demonstrates how localized healthcare research and community-based professional initiatives can shape global healthcare conversations and influence policy directions.

Also reacting to the breakthrough, Pharm. Ezeh expressed immense satisfaction over the growing global visibility of Nigerian pharmaceutical practice, emphasizing that the CPACPI framework aligns strategically with emerging global healthcare transformation agendas.

According to him, strengthening competencies, improving professional pathways, and institutionalizing structured career progression among community pharmacists remain essential steps toward building resilient, patient-centered, and sustainable primary healthcare systems capable of addressing modern healthcare challenges.

He further expressed optimism that the international exposure expected from the upcoming presentations would encourage broader institutional support and wider adoption of the standardized career progression model across Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem.

The ACPN National Chairman added that eliminating professional complacency and promoting continuous competency development among pharmacists remain critical to improving patient outcomes, strengthening pharmaceutical care services, and advancing healthcare delivery standards.
With the acceptance of the two abstracts, Nigerian pharmacy research and the CPACPI framework have now gained increased global visibility, further reinforcing Nigeria’s growing contribution to pharmaceutical innovation, workforce development, professional excellence, and evidence-based healthcare reforms within the international pharmacy community.

Stakeholders believe the recognition further underscores the profession’s commitment to capacity building, innovation, research excellence, and sustainable healthcare advancement both within Nigeria and across the global pharmaceutical landscape.
