The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has set N100,000 re connection fee for those caught stealing electricity.
The Commission in a statement signed by the Vice Chairman, Engr.Sanusi Garba said it approved the N50,000 to N100,000 reconnection costs and administrative charges based on incessant complaints from the Distribution Companies (DisCos) on energy theft by customers.
“Any customer that gains unauthorized access to electricity by tampering or meter bypass shall be reconnected upon payment of the reconnection costs,” NERC noted.
While first time offenders will pay the N50,000 fine, repetitive ones will pay from N75,000, the statement clarified.
The DisCos have continually complained of customers who bypass their meters and those who are illegally connected to their networks without paying for the electricity they consume.
