The Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)  in Jigawa state, Mrs Josephine Obi, on Thursday disclosed that two suspects  have been arrested in connection with drug-peddlingin Dutse while briefing newsmen.

She also  said that the command also recovered one locally-made double-barrel gun and some drugs from the suspects.

Obi said the suspects were arrested on Sunday at about 8 p.m. by officers on routine patrol along Kano-Ringim road.

She said two tablets of Tramadol, one wrap of Indian hemp, two daggers and several charms were also recovered from the suspects.

“These suspects were arrested by our men last Sunday along Kano-Ringim road during a random stop-and-search on commercial vehicles.

“In the first instance, only two tablets of Tramadol and one wrap of Indian hemp were recovered from them.

“But, further check led to the discovery of one locally-made double-barrel gun with one cartridge fully loaded, two daggers and several charms.

“This is why we keep saying that there is always a close link between the use of drugs and commission of crime,” she said.

The commander said the suspects would be handed over to the police for further action.

She called on the public to support the agency in its fight against drug abuse.

“They ought to support the agency with credible information that will assist in tackling rampant abuse of illicit drugs in the state.

“The abuse of psychotropic substance and cough syrup is a worrisome development which the command is grappling with.

“There is the need for all, including traditional rulers, religious groups and community-based organizations, to join hands with the agency in fighting the menace throughout the state.

“The government also needs to fund us adequately in order for us to perform our duty effectively,’’ Obi said.
