The Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Western Zone, Otunba Babatunde Adesokan, has issued a strong warning to travel agencies against unethical practices, particularly the mismanagement of clients’ funds and breach of trust.
Speaking during the association’s monthly general meeting held in Ibadan, Adesokan emphasized the importance of professionalism, due diligence, and transparency in travel services, especially in ticketing, tour packaging, and visa processing.
He urged travel consultants to prioritize client satisfaction and avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the industry.
Addressing the issue of unregistered operators, Adesokan revealed that NANTA has partnered with the Oyo State Government to identify and clamp down on fraudulent agencies.
He announced the inauguration of a special task force currently active in enforcing compliance across the state.
While welcoming the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Wasiu Olatubosun, Adesokan lauded the commissioner for his innovative efforts in transforming the sector and promoting cultural tourism.
He also expressed concern over the activities of some private individuals organizing travel and tourism without going through proper regulatory channels, a practice he said undermines the role of licensed agencies.
In his remarks, Commissioner Olatubosun highlighted the strides made under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, describing him as the “Engineer of modern Oyo State.”
He responded to concerns raised by NANTA members, stressing the need for unity within the association, as division could hinder progress in reforming the industry.
He pledged continued collaboration with NANTA in promoting ethical practices and maintaining a well-regulated tourism and travel sector.
Also speaking at the event, NANTA Deputy National President, Dr. Tokunbo Dagunduro, advised members to avoid making visa guarantees, cautioning that only consulates have the authority to grant such approvals. Veteran travel expert Otunba Jide Sarayi echoed the call for adherence to international best practices to build trust and credibility in the industry.
