The Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, has called on society to honour, support and celebrate mothers living with disabilities for their courage, resilience and sacrifices in raising their children despite enormous challenges.
In a statement commemorating Mother’s Day, Adekanmbi described mothers with disabilities as symbols of unconditional love, strength and hope, noting that many of them continue to nurture and care for their families in environments lacking accessibility and adequate support systems.
He said mothers living with disabilities often face physical, emotional and societal challenges, including discrimination, neglect and stigma, yet remain committed to their responsibilities as caregivers and protectors of their children.
According to him, “Imagine a mother on a wheelchair struggling daily to provide comfort and care for her children in an environment where accessibility is limited and compassion is scarce. Imagine the blind mother who cannot see the faces of her children, yet sees their needs more clearly than many with sight.
“Imagine the deaf mother, who may not hear the cries of her child, yet understands the language of love more deeply than words can express.”
Adekanmbi stressed that mothers with disabilities deserve more than sympathy, urging society to embrace inclusion, kindness and practical support for persons living with disabilities.
He added that a humane society should be measured not by how it treats the powerful but by how it embraces and supports vulnerable groups.
The agency boss further encouraged individuals and institutions to create inclusive environments and extend helping hands to mothers with disabilities around them.
“To every mother living with a disability, we celebrate your courage, your endurance and your unbreakable spirit. You are extraordinary, and your sacrifices will never go unnoticed,” he stated.
He also felicitated mothers across the country on the occasion of Mother’s Day.
