The Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), Ibadan, has taken a bold step in the fight against malaria by enrolling all its students in the Geneith Health Competition (GHC). The move signals the institution’s strong commitment to health education and awareness, while also empowering its students to become advocates for a malaria-free Nigeria.
The Geneith Health Competition, organized by CEOAFRICA, sponsored by Geneith Pharmaceuticals Limited, and powered by Coatal Forte Softgel, is the first of its kind in Africa. It focuses on malaria awareness, education, advocacy, and empowerment among students, with a vision to produce a generation equipped with practical knowledge on prevention and treatment.
The official flag-off ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 16, 2025, at the college’s conference room. The event was attended by the college management, stakeholders from the health sector, and other notable figures dedicated to eradicating malaria.
Since its launch on May 2, 2025, in Abuja by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the competition has gained nationwide recognition. Distinguished guests at the launch included Hajia Wosilat Giwa, Chairperson of the Governing Council Board of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria; Pharm. Tanko Ibrahim Ayuba, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN); and Pharm. (Prof.) Cyril Odianose Usifoh, immediate past PSN president and co-chairman of the College of Assessors. Their involvement underscored a unified commitment to tackling malaria.
Speaking at the FCAH&PT flag-off, Acting Provost Dr. Chidi Nweze Okpeze described the initiative as an important milestone for the institution.
“Participating in the Geneith Health Competition is a significant step towards empowering our students. It will deepen their knowledge about malaria and inspire them to contribute positively to national health,” he said.
Dr. Okpeze added that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda to revitalize the healthcare system: “As an institution, we want to key into this initiative by registering our students.”
The event was graced by top management members, including Deputy Provosts Dr. Alonge (Academics) and Dr. S.O. Odukoya (Administration); Acting Registrar Mrs. O.Y. Popoola; Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Okorafor; College Medical Doctor Dr. Oladipupo; SUG President Akanbi-Stone Adeola; and Senate President Adebayo Bolutife, among others.
Prince Cletus Ilobanafor, MD/CEO of CEOAFRICA and initiator of the competition, emphasized its importance, stating:
“Ninety-six percent of illnesses reported in school clinics are linked to malaria. Through this competition, with ₦1 billion in sponsorship from Geneith Pharmaceuticals, including ₦420 million for scholarships and awards, we want students to become the vanguard of a malaria-free Nigeria.”
Student leaders expressed enthusiasm for the programme. SUG President Adeola called it a “life-changing opportunity,” pledging students’ full commitment to the fight. Similarly, Dr. Oladipupo highlighted the project’s relevance, noting that “sanitation, prevention, and awareness are key in addressing malaria resistance, and if students are healthy, their education will thrive.”
With enrollment for the competition open until February 15, 2026, FCAH&PT’s move sets a precedent for other Nigerian institutions to follow. Interested schools can register via www.geneithhealthcompetition.com.
By joining the initiative, FCAH&PT has reinforced the role of education in public health, inspiring collective action for a malaria-free future in Nigeria.
