The gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Oyo state, Engr Seyi Makinde has promised that the soccer club in the state, Shooting Stars SC will move back to the Nigerian Professional Football League and play continental competitions within two years of his assumption of office as the governor of the state next year.
Makinde said this in a release sent from his campaign office and signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade.
He was speaking at the 2nd Lagelu Inter-Secondary Schools Relay Race which he has been sponsoring since its inception last year.
Makinde thanked the Chairman of Splash FM, Chief Adebayo Akande for the establishment of the sporting event but regretted that the state government failed in its duty by abandoning the age long tradition of Inter House Sports in public secondary schools even though, sports is a compulsory part of the education curricula.
He promised to ensure that the number of schools which participate in the event from next year increases to over 600 secondary schools from the 160 secondary schools which participated in this year’s event.
This increase will lead to more talents being discovered and nurtured to represent the country in international competitions.
Makinde said that there is a plan in place not only to fund Shooting Stars SC and Crown FC, Ogbomoso, but also to reorganise their management to meet global standards.
