The Kano State House of Assembly has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of two serving lawmakers within the space of one hour, a development Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has described as a dark and heartbreaking moment in the history of the state.
The first to pass on was Hon. Aminu Sa’ad Ungoggo, who represented Ungoggo Local Government Area and served as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation. He was said to have been at the Assembly complex earlier in the day where he attended committee meetings before news of his death broke.
While lawmakers and staff were still grappling with the shocking loss, tragedy struck again barely an hour later with the confirmation of the death of Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the member representing Kano Municipal Local Government Area and Chairman, House Committee on Pilgrims.
Governor Yusuf, in a condolence message issued on Wednesday and signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, expressed profound shock and deep pain over the near-simultaneous demise of the two legislators.
Describing the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy that words can hardly describe,” the governor said the loss has plunged the government and people of Kano State into collective grief.
According to him, the late lawmakers were dedicated public servants, loyal politicians and dependable voices of their constituents, whose commitment to lawmaking and grassroots representation remained unquestionable.
“Kano State has lost two sons who devoted their lives to public service. Their sudden departure has created a painful vacuum in the Assembly and in their respective communities,” the governor stated.
He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the leadership and members of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the people of Kano Municipal and Ungoggo Local Government Areas.
Earlier, the Director-General, Media and Public Relations to the Governor, Malam Sanusi Bature, had confirmed the death of Hon. Daneji shortly after the announcement of Hon. Ungoggo’s demise.
Also reacting, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Amb. Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi (HOD), described the passing of the two lawmakers as a great loss to the Assembly and Kano State, praying Allah (SWT) to forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus.
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Special Duties, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabara, expressed deep shock over the death of Hon. Engr. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, noting that his passion for public service, technical expertise as an engineer and commitment to community development left an indelible mark on Kano Municipal Constituency.
Governor Yusuf urged the people of the state to remain calm, united and prayerful, describing the tragedy as a test of faith and collective resilience.
Meanwhile, Hon. Aminu Sa’ad Ungoggo has been laid to rest at the Ungoggo Cemetery, while the funeral prayers for Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji are scheduled to take place by 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Emir’s Palace Mosque.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Kano State House of Assembly under the able leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jibrin Ismail Falgore, and the families of the deceased lawmakers. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” the governor said.
Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
