History often credits governments for revolutions that were first imagined by individuals. Long before policy statements are drafted and budgets approved, someone dares to think ahead of the momentum acts. No other person can be the talking point, other than Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi.

In early 2024, when conversations around electric mobility were still largely aspirational, Sanusi quietly initiated what would become the first meaningful electric transport intervention in the state.

It was not a publicity exercise, nor a political rehearsal. It was a calculated development statement: that Oyo State’s future could no longer be built on outdated systems.
At the time, the move stood out precisely because it arrived without government compulsion.

Sanusi’s initiative introduced electric buses as a viable alternative to fossil-fuel dependency, demonstrating that sustainability, efficiency and urban dignity were not luxuries, but necessities.

What followed was inevitable. At the grand finale of the Oyo @50 celebrations, Governor Seyi Makinde’s announcement that the state would procure electric buses marked a watershed moment. Beyond the applause and symbolism, the declaration effectively validated a blueprint that had already been tested and proven by Sanusi.

This is how influence truly works. It does not shout for attention. It establishes a model so compelling that institutions are compelled to follow.

Sanusi’s approach to development has always resisted spectacle in favour of structure. His interventions are defined by foresight, not urgency; by permanence, not performance. Whether in infrastructure, enterprise, hospitality or social investment, he has consistently prioritised systems that can endure beyond personalities.

The electric mobility initiative was no exception. By introducing electric buses ahead of government adoption, Sanusi reframed the conversation around public transport in Oyo State. He showed that modern cities are not built by waiting for perfect conditions, but by creating new standards.

Cleaner energy, lower operating costs, reduced environmental impact and long-term economic efficiency were no longer abstract ideals, they were practical outcomes.

The state’s decision to follow suit is therefore not coincidental. It is a recognition that effective leadership can emerge outside formal power, and that good ideas deserve institutional backing regardless of their origin.

What makes Sanusi’s influence especially compelling is the restraint with which it is exercised. He has never sought ownership of the narrative. Instead, he has allowed results to speak. In a society where visibility is often mistaken for value, his leadership reminds us that the most consequential actors are often the least noisy.

At 50 years, Oyo State stands at a defining moment. The decision to embrace electric buses signals a commitment to a future anchored in sustainability and innovation. Yet beneath the policy lies a deeper truth: this future was already imagined and initiated by a private citizen who understood that progress begins with courage.

Sanusi’s blueprint is not confined to transport. It reflects a broader philosophy in which wealth is treated as responsibility, and leadership as stewardship. His development interventions consistently aim to empower rather than impress, to build institutions rather than personalities.
The electric buses soon to ply Oyo State’s roads will therefore represent more than a transport solution.

They will stand as moving evidence of how one individual’s foresight can influence public policy without occupying public office.

In the end, Jubril Dotun Sanusi’s role in this story is not about being first for recognition’s sake. It is about being first so others can follow.

And now, with the state itself adopting his vision, his influence has completed its most powerful journey, from private conviction to public transformation.
Not enforced by authority. But embraced by the future.
