The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full investigation into the tragic incident in Oyo State that led to the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, during a traffic operation involving the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP described the incident as deeply unfortunate and assured that the police officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody.
He emphasized that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, with its findings made public to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to the protection of lives and property and assures the family of the deceased that justice will be served,” Adejobi said.
Meanwhile, the Police Force has also condemned a separate violent attack on its operatives in Edo State, describing it as an unprovoked act of lawlessness. According to the statement, officers of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) were attacked in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, by a mob near the University of Benin in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
The mob reportedly blocked the road and assaulted the officers with sticks, stones, and other dangerous objects, leaving two officers seriously injured. The police commended the officers for maintaining restraint and not resorting to the use of force, despite the life-threatening situation.
“The Nigeria Police Force warns against acts of lawlessness and unprovoked aggression against its personnel,” Adejobi stated, adding that investigations into the Edo incident are also ongoing and that legal action will be taken against those found culpable.
The police appealed to Nigerians to remain law-abiding and encouraged citizens to channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means.
