Staff of The Polytechnic Ibadan have called on the Oyo state Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde to improve subvention to the institution, as salary augmentation is strangulating Polytechnics across the state.
Speaking to newsmen at the beginning of a three-day warning strike, Comrade Abiodun Abegunde (SSANIP Chairman, The Polytechnic Ibadan) appealed for greater investment Polytechnic education as Polytechnics are critical to manpower development for nation building. He noted that salary augmentation in The Polytechnic Ibadan gulps almost a billion naira, which is unsustainable, considering the enrollment level and school fees payable in the institution.
The SSANIP Chairman demanded an immediate implementation of the 25%/35% increase in salary as obtained in LAUTECH and contemporary institutions and called for immediate constitution of the Governing Council, and approval of 2023 promotion for Senior Staff.
While corroborating, the Chairman of local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Dr Kola Lawal and None Academic Staff Union (NASU) noted that the Unions are not on a war path with Governor Seyi Makinde, rather they are appealing that staff of the institutions are given their entitlements
They reiterated that Platinum consultant is suffocating the institution, as nothing could be done without his approval. They stated that the 10% charged by the consultant represents a drain pipe to an income which isn’t enough to cater for the institution’s need!
