…As AICMO President Calls on Men to Rise a
The Archdiocese of Ibadan Catholic Men Organisation (AICMO) has unveiled a robust lineup of activities for the 2025 Father’s Day celebration, focusing on spiritual renewal and a collective call for men to embrace their responsibilities amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking at a press conference held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church in Ibadan, AICMO President, Sir Felix Adoroh, revealed that this year’s theme—“Pilgrim of Hope: Fathers as Beacon of the Church and Family”—was chosen to reflect the evolving yet crucial role of men in the home, church, and wider society.
The highlight of the celebration is a spiritual retreat scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Adoroh described it as timely and essential.
“We cannot pretend that men are not affected by the harsh realities of today’s economy. Many are silently bearing heavy burdens. This retreat offers a space to recharge spiritually, find brotherhood, and renew strength for the journey ahead,” he stated.
Father’s Day, observed annually on the first Sunday of May by the Nigerian Catholic Church in line with the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, will be marked this year on Sunday, May 4, with special thanksgiving Masses across the archdiocese.
Adoroh also used the platform to encourage wider participation in the Catholic Men Organisation, expressing concern over the low turnout of eligible men in many parishes.
“Any sacramentally married man or man above 35 is qualified to be a member. There are spiritual benefits in fellowship and service, and this is a time when men must rise to rebuild society from the family unit,” he urged.
Reflecting on the organisation’s legacy, Adoroh paid tribute to past leaders, chaplains, and acknowledged the unwavering support of the Catholic Women Organisation. He also expressed deep gratitude to His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel ’Leke Abegunrin, and the current chaplain, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ajewole, for their continuous spiritual guidance.
Also speaking, Rev’d Dr. Made JK Idowu, Parish Priest of St. Ignatius of Loyola and chaplain to the parish-level CMO, emphasized the sacred role of fathers.
“A father is not just a provider but a pillar—spiritually, emotionally, and morally. In a world that constantly challenges the family unit, fathers must stand firm in faith and character,” he said.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Sir Okereke, shared insights into the meticulous planning behind the event and extended an open invitation beyond the Catholic community.
“This is not just a Catholic thing. Any man, Catholic or not, seeking guidance, brotherhood, and purpose can benefit from what we’re doing,” he noted.
He confirmed that the retreat will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, and will be facilitated by Rev. Fr. Eric Akinboboye, who will deliver a spiritually uplifting and motivational session aimed at empowering fathers.
Beyond the retreat, the Father’s Day activities will include a three-day novena, health and wellness talks, spiritual workshops, and opportunities for fellowship and bonding within parishes.
In closing, Sir Felix Adoroh paid homage to the late Pope Francis, who recently passed away at the age of 88.
“He lived a fulfilled and exemplary life. We pray for the repose of his soul and for God’s guidance on the College of Cardinals as they prepare to choose a new Pope,” he said.
