Today, His Royal Majesty, Oba Alhaji (Engr.) Bashir Olalekan Abioye (Siyanbola IV), the Onigbeti of Igbeti Kingdom in Olorunsogo Local Government Area of Oyo State, celebrates his first coronation anniversary. In this interview, the monarch reflects on his experiences over the past year and shares his vision for the kingdom. Excerpts:

How would you describe your first year on the throne?

First and foremost, I give glory to Almighty God who chose me to serve my community. I also appreciate the efforts of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Engr Seyi Makinde FNSE, for approving my ascension to the throne. To become a leader, or rather a servant-leader is a significant task. As a king, one must be prepared to serve, not rule, and must study the community thoroughly to understand its needs.
In the past year, I faced some challenges, but I thank God for helping me provide solutions to lingering issues such as land disputes between families and security concerns. We have made significant progress in promoting mutual love and existence within the community, and the people now see Igbeti as their Mecca and Jerusalem. Everyone is determined to take Igbeti to the next level.

As a monarch, what has been your experience compared to your expectations, and what lessons have you learnt about leadership?

As a monarch, my experience has been different from what I expected. I have learnt that being a king requires specific knowledge and prerequisites. Thankfully, my background as an engineer has prepared me well for this role, as I am skilled in people management and problem solving.

What are the significant accomplishments and initiatives you have undertaken in the past year?

In the past year, I achieved some significant milestones, including facilitating the establishment of three additional secondary schools, bringing the total to eight. We have also resolved about 70 per cent of the land cases, which had previously discouraged investors. With the support of Governor Seyi Makinde, I plan to develop Igbeti into a mini-Dubai, focusing on agriculture, industry and tourism.

What are your top priorities for the Igbeti kingdom?

My top priority is to develop Igbeti through its natural and human resources. We will work to secure our land, resolve the remaining land crisis issues, and promote our culture and tradition. I envision Igbeti becoming an industrial hub and a tourist destination, showcasing its natural attractions like IyaMapo and Agbele.

What message do you have for your subjects as you mark your first anniversary?

I ask for your continued support, prayers and cooperation. With your help, we will achieve our goals and create a brighter future for Igbeti.

As the custodian of our cultural heritage, what steps are you taking to promote and preserve traditions and customs?

As the custodian of our cultural heritage, I am committed to preserving and promoting our traditions. We must protect our language, culture and values, and pass them down to future generations.

How would you describe the present administration of Governor Seyi Makinde?

The present administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is visionary and proactive. The governor has plans for the state’s future and has performed excellently, especially in the Oke Ogun area.

What were your growing-up years like?
I grew up in Igbeti. I attended primary and secondary school locally before pursuing higher education in mechanical engineering at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin and Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, for my National Diploma and Higher National Diploma, respectively. I also attended various professional courses to prepare myself for leadership.

What is your advice for sons and daughters of Igbeti Kingdom?

To all sons and daughters of Igbeti, I advise that they be good ambassadors of our town. They should avoid anything that may tarnish their image or that of our community. They should continue to support me with their advice, cooperation and prayers, and always put the interest of Igbeti first.
