From a modest provision store in Ibadan to building a growing retail and lifestyle brand, the entrepreneurial journey of Prince Adeyinka Afonja, Chairman and CEO of Ace Mall, has received another significant recognition with his emergence as a recipient of the Brand Nigeria Leadership Award 2026.
Afonja was among distinguished business leaders, corporate organisations and influential personalities honoured at the Brand Nigeria Leadership Forum and Awards held on Friday, October 30, at the Eko Atlantic City Sales Office, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The recognition brought together outstanding names from different segments of the Nigerian economy, celebrating their contributions to enterprise development, innovation, economic advancement and the country’s corporate reputation.

Other award recipients included prominent brands and personalities from telecommunications, fintech, banking, financial services, manufacturing and construction, reflecting the diversity of industries playing important roles in Nigeria’s economic development.
For the Ace Mall founder, however, the award represents more than a corporate distinction. It offers an opportunity to spotlight the possibilities of indigenous entrepreneurship and the impact of sustained investment in building a Nigerian brand.
The Story Behind the Ace Mall Brand
Afonja’s transition from banking into entrepreneurship laid the foundation for what has become an expanding retail business. After retiring from banking, he ventured into business in 2012, starting with a modest provision store in Ibadan.
What began as a relatively small retail operation gradually developed into a more structured shopping enterprise through business expansion, strategic planning and an appreciation of the changing needs of Nigerian consumers.
Over the years, Ace Mall has grown beyond conventional supermarket operations, incorporating entertainment and lifestyle experiences such as cinemas, games arcades, eateries and other customer-focused services.
Its presence across Ibadan, Iseyin, Ogbomoso, Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode demonstrates the company’s ambition to extend organised retail services beyond major commercial centres and bring modern shopping experiences closer to more communities.
The company’s growth has also contributed to economic activities through employment, supplier relationships and opportunities for other businesses operating within the retail and service sectors.
Afonja’s interests also extend beyond commercial enterprise, with involvement in philanthropy, education and community development, including interventions supporting educational institutions and opportunities for young people.
Putting Nigerian Enterprise on the Map
The philosophy behind the Brand Nigeria Leadership Forum and Awards 2026 is anchored on the vision: “We Are Brand Nigeria – Creating Value, Shaping Perception, Building Our Future.”
The platform seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s identity and reputation by recognising businesses, institutions and individuals whose contributions demonstrate the country’s capacity for innovation, enterprise and sustainable development.
Its vision rests on six interconnected pillars: creating value through meaningful economic contributions; shaping perception through positive national representation; building the future through sustainable investments; recognising excellence and leadership; strengthening the reputation of Nigerian brands; and promoting their relevance in the global marketplace.
These principles underscore the importance of private-sector participation in national development and the need to celebrate home-grown businesses making meaningful contributions to the economy.
The 2026 gathering also featured the unveiling of TOP 50 BRANDS NIGERIA® 2026 and the maiden edition of TOP 20 FINTECH BRANDS NIGERIA®, bringing further attention to the performance, influence and growing relevance of Nigerian brands.
For Afonja, the recognition comes at a time when indigenous businesses are increasingly seeking to expand their reach, strengthen their market positions and compete in an evolving business environment.
His award-winning journey provides another example of how entrepreneurial vision, business commitment and strategic expansion can contribute to the growth of home-grown enterprises.
With Ace Mall continuing to develop its retail and lifestyle offerings, the Brand Nigeria Leadership Award 2026 adds another notable milestone to the company’s story and its founder’s contribution to Nigeria’s business landscape.
