The former Chairperson of Delta State Tourism Board and renowned tourism practitioner and author of educational books on tourism, Fidelia Salami, is set to embark on Guinness World Records nerve-wracking Read – a – Thorn, longest marathon reading aloud, for students’ engagement, reading books on tourism, culture and hospitality.
The acceptance of her application for this historic venture was recently communicated to her by the authorities of Guinness World Records. With this, Salami is set to send to the archive the present record of 215 hours set by a Nigerian, Samuel Ajao, in May 2024, with her sight set on hitting 300 hours mark.
Speaking on this development, she noted, ‘‘the motivation is to open up the reading culture of students. My mission drive and focus is making a tangible difference in the reading culture of students.
‘‘As a national tourism author, my interest and enthusiasm in developing students reading skills and inspire students to read hard cover books motivated me to embark on the Guinness World Records longest marathon reading aloud for students engagement.’’
Achieving this feat, requires a lot, hence the noted author on tourism education, disclosed, ‘‘I am putting up an incredible team for the execution of the historic adventure. The team comprises the following: Media Coverage; Press; Photography; Medical; and Time Keepers, among others.’’
Spanning November 1 and 15 in Asaba, she noted, ‘‘I will be reading tourism, culture and hospitality books. Interestingly, my support base comprises my family members, individuals, press, government and industry gurus. I am ever grateful that everyone is encouraging me to achieve this historic adventure.’’
However, she noted, ‘‘although I am still handicapped in financing the project, I am mentally prepared and confident to take on this incredible challenge. Having written several books on tourism, I must endeavour to motivate students to cultivate a passion for reading books for intellectual purposes.
‘‘There is no doubt that this world record event will boost my resume but most importantly, I would have achieved my ultimate focus and goal to inspire millions of students that will see a spike in tourism interest, public reading, book clubs, arts, culture and creative-related engagements.’’
Besides, Salami stated, ‘‘the benefits of this historic adventure include the following: The Guinness World Records Longest Marathon Reading Aloud for Student Engagement will promote and build a sound corporate image for the Ministries of education, Tourism, Arts, Culture and the Creative Industry within the federation and the world at large.
‘‘The Guinness World Record Longest Marathon Reading Aloud for Student Engagement will project Nigeria at the centre stage as an education, arts, culture and tourism promoter, having contributed immensely to a fundamental global issue towards ensuring enhanced educational growth, which is the core objective of the historic adventure.
‘‘The event will also afford the Nigerian government the unique opportunity to identify, access and proffer solutions to developmental and financing issues that may have constituted hindrances to the effective financing and development of the education, tourism, arts, culture and creative sectors of the economy.’’
On the challenge of funding for this world venture, while looking for support from the Nigerian government, corporate bodies and well-meaning Nigerians, she disclosed that she has already plunged her personal life-savings into the project because of her faith in the success and what it is set out to achieve for Nigeria as a country and not just for herself.
Saying, ‘‘the budget for the Guinness World Record is enormous, I have put in my little savings worth millions of naira into the project and I am hoping presentation of monies from every source will take care of the huge budget.’’
