The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111 led his chiefs and other personalties in the town to visited Akesan Market which was razed by midnight inferno today
The foremost monarch was also accompanied by his son ,a Federal Lawamaker Prince Akeem Adeyemi and the caretaker chairman of Oyo East local government, Prince Saheed Arowosaye, AROSAD
Oba Adeyemi expresses sadness over the incident and promise to facilitates resources and other that will bring relief to the traders and reconstruction of the Market.
Over 1000 shops were razed in the early morning market at the biggest and oldest makert in Oyo town
Also, the lawmaker representing Oyo central Senatorial district at the upper chamber of National Assembly,Senator Teslim Folarin has commisserate with the traders and people of oyo over the inferno that ravaged Akesan market this morning
Senator Folarin said he was in london when he recieved the news of the sad incident and promised to cut off his foreign trip
“It is particularly saddening due to the fact that the Akesan fire, happened just days after three children lost their lives in another fire incident at Molete area of Ibadan, also in Oyo State.”
“I have already notified officials of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Resources and Disaster Management of this incident, and I promise to ensure that the Federal Government provides adequate relief and support items to those who have lost their livelihoods, properties and wares to the inferno.”
He also urge the State Government to urgently review the firefighting provisions across the State, particularly those around major markets.
According to him,eyewitnesses from Akesan confirmed that the State Fire Services/Station closet to the market, had little or no water to tackle the blaze.
Senator Folarin maintained that “We at the Federal level and the State government must put aside partisan politics and fashion out how best to prevent future fire disasters like this. On rare occasions where there are fire incidents, we must ensure that there are adequate fire fighting equipment and properly trained fire personnel, to tackle the blaze quickly and effectively.”
He however urge the Oyo State Commissioner of Police to investigate unconfirmed reports of shooting by the Security Forces, which may have caused the death of two people, while the fire raged.
