The Federal Government has suspended the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The session was postponed due to the state funeral taking place in his hometown of Daura on the same day.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. A new date for the special FEC session will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the conclusion of the burial rites.
In recognition of President Buhari’s lifetime service to the nation, the Federal Government also declared Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday and announced a seven-day national mourning period with national flags flying at half-mast.
President Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a London clinic after a prolonged illness, will be laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, in accordance with Islamic rites. His remains are expected to arrive from London by noon.
In further tribute to the late Nigerian leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the constitution of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to organise a befitting state burial.
The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and includes key ministers such as those of Finance, Defence, Information and National Orientation, Interior, Works, Housing, FCT, and Art, Culture and Creative Economy, among others. Security chiefs and senior presidential aides have also been named as members.
According to a statement from the SGF’s office signed by Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the committee is charged with planning and coordinating all activities related to the state burial, reflecting the Tinubu administration’s commitment to honouring Buhari’s legacy with national dignity.
The Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will serve as secretary to the committee.
To further honour the late President, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at their offices for public tributes. Central condolence registers for the diplomatic community and the general public have also been opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila have been directed to accompany the late President’s remains from London and condole with the Buhari family on behalf of the nation.
