The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has expressed concern over the growing frequency of unruly behaviour by some passengers at Nigerian airports, warning that such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN advised passengers to familiarise themselves with the Passengers’ Rights and Responsibilities and Airlines’ Obligations as outlined by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and FAAN Bye Laws.
The Authority said it would not hesitate to impose relevant sanctions under the ICAO Annex 17, Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Part 17), and FAAN Bye Laws on any form of disruptive or threatening conduct within airport premises.
FAAN also revealed that it is reviewing its procedures for restraining and prosecuting offenders in line with the Airport Approved Security Programme and applicable laws.
Citing a recent incident involving a passenger on an Ibom Air flight, FAAN said the situation was initially handled by security personnel at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Domestic Terminal 2 (MM2) before its Aviation Security (AVSEC) team intervened, took the suspect into custody, and handed her over to the Nigerian Police Force for further investigation and prosecution.
FAAN urged all intending passengers to maintain civility, adhere to airport and airline rules, and avoid any conduct that could jeopardise the safety, security, and comfort of other airport users, warning that violations would attract the full weight of the law.
