Chairman House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, Hon. Olusegun Odebumi has described the recent military attack on innocent protesters in Lekki area of Lagos as well as other destruction of public and individual properties in Oyo, Abuja ,Osun and other parts of the country as needless, shameful and belligerent abuse of people’s right to peacefully express their grief and challenge their government in the most charitable manner as obtainable in any every democratic settings.
The member representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency lamented that the shooting of young men and women at Lekki area of Lagos in particular was needless and unprovoked as they have coordinated themselves so far in the most peaceful and orderly way, noting that it is the most heinous thing the country has witnessed since the 4th republic began in 1999.
He further argued that even if the protesters at the Lekki Toll had contravened the curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government, such an infringement and non-observance did not warrant the use of live ammunition by the Nigerian military to confront hitherto peaceful, unarmed and defenseless protesters. Actions as this are undemocratic, despotic, imperious and non-defensible. It is huge indictment on our democracy.
He call on the federal government to immediately commence a thorough investigation into these killings and ensure no one guilty is spared. ‘There has to be consequences for every action’, he insisted. He similarly call on Federal Government to recognized the victims as fallen heroes of good governance.
In the same vein, Hon Dokun also call on the leadership of the National Assembly to convene an emergency joint sitting to look into the state of the nation with a view to implementing steps to address this claptrap and prevent continuous breakdown of law and order.
