ECOWAS Gives Mali’s junta Ultimatum to Appoint president

Leaders of Economic Community Of West Africa State ECOWAS on Monday issued an ultimatum to the military junta which has taken power in Mali.

Meeting in Niamey, Niger, the West African leaders  urge the  junta Mali to respect a timetable to appoint a transitional president and prime minister among civilians.

Jean-Claude Brou, president of ECOWAS reaffirms the commission’s determination to ensure a rapid return to constitutional order in the country, with a political transition led by a civilian President and Prime Minister for a period of 12 months,”stressed.

President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, his Prime Minister and senior members of his government were arrested and detained on 18 August

The 15 leaders constituting ECOWAS, in a unanimous statement, said the junta has Tuesday, September 15, to elect a new president and prime minister who will be civilians not later than September 15, 2020.”

, Cedeao has not lifted the sanctions taken against Mali after the coup d’état: closure of borders, and embargo on financial and commercial exchanges.
