Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chief Lekan Alabi, describing the late senior Ibadan chief, veteran journalist and public affairs analyst as a monumental loss to Oyo State and Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Governor Makinde paid glowing tribute to the late Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, acknowledging his immense contributions to journalism, culture, public service and community development.
The governor described Chief Alabi as an outstanding elder statesman, cultural icon and respected community leader whose life was devoted to truth, integrity and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was a man of immense wisdom, integrity, and dedication. His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering. Oyo State has lost one of its finest sons,” Makinde said.
Governor Makinde extended his heartfelt condolences to the Alabi family, friends and associates, as well as the people of Ibadan and the entire Oyo State, urging them to find comfort in the enduring legacy of the late journalist and traditional chief.
He noted that Chief Alabi’s remarkable contributions to society would continue to inspire future generations.
“The government and people of Oyo State stand with the Alabi family at this difficult time. May the Almighty grant them strength and comfort, and may Chief Lekan Alabi’s soul rest in perfect peace,” the governor added.
Chief Lekan Alabi, a renowned journalist, author, public relations consultant and multiple-time press secretary to former governors of Oyo State, died on Friday at the age of 76. He was also the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland and was widely celebrated for his lifelong commitment to promoting Yoruba history, culture and tradition.
