The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away. The Ogun State Government confirmed the monarch’s death in an official statement issued late Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Born on May 10, 1934, into the Royal House of Anikinaiya in Imupa, Ijebu Ode, Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 and reigned for 65 years—making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in Nigeria’s history.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a statement personally signed, described the monarch’s death as a profound loss not only to Ijebuland but to Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general,” the governor stated.
The governor also noted the emotional weight of the day, describing it as a “double sadness” as the news came hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in a London hospital.
Oba Adetona was widely celebrated for his transformative leadership. His reign was marked by an enduring commitment to education, healthcare, economic development, and cultural preservation. The annual Ojude Oba festival, held in his honour, became a global cultural showcase under his reign, further solidifying Ijebuland’s reputation as a hub of commerce and tradition.
“Under his guidance, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure and community development. His leadership not only enhanced the cultural heritage of Ijebuland but also solidified its reputation as a thriving hub of commerce and tradition,” the governor added.
As tributes pour in from across the country, Oba Adetona is remembered as a beacon of wisdom, peace, and progress. His legacy will live on through the values he upheld and the countless lives he touched during his historic reign.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family in the coming days.
