The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has raised concerns over the structural condition of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo, alleging that the multi-billion naira project is already showing signs of failure and poses a serious danger to road users.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Council’s Head of Media and Publicity, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, the APC claimed that visible structural defects, including a deep pothole and other distress points, had appeared on the flyover barely a month after it was commissioned.
The opposition party described the development as unacceptable, warning that the alleged defects constitute a threat to the lives of motorists and other users of the facility.
The APC said the situation had vindicated the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, a professional engineer, to decline participation in the commissioning ceremony despite receiving an invitation from the Osun State Government.
According to the statement, the party had earlier advised the monarch not to lend his professional reputation to what it described as a controversial project, insisting that subsequent developments had justified that position.
The Council also questioned the award of the contract to Kimzee Global Investment, alleging that the company lacked the requisite civil engineering experience for a project of such magnitude. It further claimed that the cost of the flyover rose to over ₦20 billion following multiple contract variations carried out without adequate transparency.
The APC argued that the flyover was not a priority infrastructure project based on traffic realities in the area and accused the Adeleke administration of awarding major construction projects to companies allegedly without proven expertise in road and bridge construction.
The party also alleged that recently commissioned road projects in Ila and Iwo were already showing signs of deterioration shortly after completion.
Consequently, the APC called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to immediately shut down the LAMECO Flyover to allow an independent structural integrity assessment by qualified professionals before reopening it to the public.
It also urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid using the flyover where possible until experts certify it safe.
The opposition maintained that public safety should not be compromised for political considerations and called for greater transparency and accountability in the execution of public infrastructure projects.
The Osun State Government had not responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
