The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has formally announced that he will not participate in the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election.
Basiru made this known on Saturday during the commissioning of the Alubarika House in Alekuwodo, Osogbo, where he delivered a statement addressing his political plans and the future of the party in Osun State.
He explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to him, the demands of his national assignment as APC National Secretary and the imperative of strengthening the party’s structures nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections require his full and undivided attention.
“Considering the enormous responsibilities of my current office as National Secretary of our great party, and after due consultations with our esteemed leaders and stakeholders—particularly the Leader of our party and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—it has become necessary to emphatically state that I shall not be contesting the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election,” he said.
He added that ensuring the unity, stability and success of the APC at all levels must remain his top priority as the party prepares for future electoral contests.
Basiru, however, stressed that his withdrawal from the governorship race does not signify a retreat from progressive leadership or the political development of Osun State. He reaffirmed his commitment to working with party members to support emerging leaders and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.
He also expressed appreciation to members of the Alubarika Movement and APC supporters for their unwavering encouragement, prayers and confidence in his leadership.
