The planned posthumous birthday celebration of former Oyo State Governor, Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, alongside the official unveiling of the Alao-Akala Transformation Movement (ATM), has been postponed indefinitely following the recent kidnapping and killing of some teachers and children in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a statement signed by Chief Mrs. Oluwakemi Alao-Akala, Chairperson of the Alao-Akala Transformation Movement (ATM), the family and leadership of the movement said the decision was taken out of respect for the victims, their families, and the prevailing security concerns in the state.
The events were earlier scheduled to hold on June 3, 2026, in Ogbomoso.
According to the statement, the organisers said proceeding with a celebration at a time when some victims remain in captivity would be insensitive and contrary to the values the late Alao-Akala represented during his lifetime.
The statement noted that the former governor was deeply committed to the welfare of the people, describing him as a leader who devoted his life to public service, security, and development.
“Dead or alive, Alao-Akala would never approve of holding a celebration while children and teachers are in captivity, while families cannot sleep, while security agencies are still searching for the missing,” the statement read.
ATM also announced the indefinite postponement of all activities associated with the unveiling of the movement and the posthumous birthday celebration.
The group said a new date would be announced when the security situation improves and when it becomes appropriate to hold such gatherings.
The movement further urged its members across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State and supporters of the late governor to pray for the safe return of those still in captivity, support affected families, and cooperate with security agencies.
The statement added that the movement remains committed to the ideals of transformation, service, and community development championed by the late former governor.
