President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention Sub-Committee on Programmes and Events, charging members to work diligently to ensure the success of the party’s national convention.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, Akpabio described the appointment of the members as a privilege and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the party’s leadership.
According to him, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress had assembled experienced hands for the assignment, expressing confidence that the committee would deliver effectively.
“It is a privilege to be recognised by the ruling APC. The leadership of the party under Professor Yelwata Natawe has done well by assembling experienced hands as members of the Programmes and Events Sub-Committee. Therefore, we should not have any issues in this committee as far as performance is concerned,” he said.
Akpabio urged members to ensure proper coordination of activities at the convention to avoid disorder and unnecessary repetition of speeches.
He added that the committee should also take into consideration the country’s six geo-political zones to allow sub-national leaders, particularly governors, to showcase their achievements.
The Senate President also reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to supporting the programmes and policies of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said the legislature would continue to back the government’s economic reforms, including the harmonisation of the foreign exchange market, removal of fuel subsidy and ongoing tax reforms aimed at increasing revenue from the non-oil sector.
Akpabio noted that the increasing number of defections into the APC was an indication of growing confidence in the administration’s policies since 2023.
According to him, the planned convention would usher in new national officers of the party and strengthen the platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, supported Akpabio’s position on the administration’s economic reforms and charged members of the committee to work hard to ensure a successful convention.
