His Royal Majesty Ambrose Odiri Owhe I, the traditional ruler of Umeh Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, has passed away at the age of 103, marking the end of a remarkable 50-year reign.

The revered monarch, who ascended the throne in 1975 and was officially gazetted in 1984 by the then Bendel State Government, was the first traditional ruler of Umeh Kingdom to receive formal state recognition.

The announcement of his passing was made on Thursday by the Umeh Kingdom Traditional Council of Chiefs (Ogbedion).

A statement jointly signed by the Adheise of Umeh Kingdom, High Chief James Omobor, and the Azano of Umeh Kingdom, Prince Meshack Owhe, was read by the council’s secretary, Philip Utoro.

“It is with hearts filled with grief but deep gratitude to God for an illustrious and magnificent reign that we announce the transition of our distinguished monarch, His Royal Majesty, Ambrose Odiri Owhe I, J.P.,” the statement read.

To mark the beginning of traditional mourning rites, fourteen cannon shots were fired before the formal announcement, followed by a minute of silence and seven additional shots. The monarch’s royal stool was ceremonially covered by three Edions (quarter heads), signaling the official commencement of the mourning period.

The Traditional Council has directed all residents of Umeh Kingdom to prepare necessary supplies by Sunday, June 1. A seven-day mourning period will commence on Monday, June 2, and end on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

During the mourning period:

No markets, farming activities, or ceremonies will be allowed.

All public institutions are to fly their flags at half-mast.

Social media platforms affiliated with the kingdom must display the late monarch’s photograph, and individuals are encouraged to do the same.

All titled chiefs, notables, and residents are to wear black armbands on their left arms.

Known for his humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his people, Owhe I was widely regarded as a symbol of Umeh’s cultural heritage. His reign brought unprecedented peace, development, and unity, transforming Umeh from a quiet riverside village into one of the fastest-growing communities in Delta State.

His son, Prince Rock Owhe, who holds the title of Azano of Umeh Kingdom, has been appointed as the Regent. He will oversee the affairs of the palace and the kingdom until a new monarch is installed.
