Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared that the party will not engage in any political merger or coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, even as they opened the door to individuals and groups willing to join the PDP’s fold.
This resolution was part of a communiqué issued at the end of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) 2025/4th meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday.
The meeting, chaired by Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, also resolved to uphold the party’s earlier position on the contentious issue of its National Secretary. While recognizing the recent Supreme Court judgment, the forum recommended that the Deputy National Secretary act in that capacity pending a formal replacement from the South East zone.
In a strong stance on constitutional governance, the governors announced their decision to seek Supreme Court interpretation on the legality of declaring a state of emergency in any state, a move linked to recent political tensions in Rivers State.
“We restate our solidarity with His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and express concern over the ordeal in which his state and people are being plunged,” the communiqué read.
Security challenges across the country also drew attention at the meeting. The governors expressed alarm over deteriorating security conditions in states such as Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo. They called for a strategic overhaul, including a grassroots-driven approach to national security.
“We condemn the recent attacks in Plateau State and commiserate with those who lost loved ones and property in the violence,” the forum stated.
The PDP governors resolved to work with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and other organs to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27. They also scheduled the party’s national convention for August 28 to 30 in Kano.
Key committees were constituted to facilitate the process:
- Zoning Committee: Governor Douye Diri (Chairman), Governor Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman), and Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary).
- National Convention Committee: Governor Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Governor Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman), and Governor Peter Mbah (Secretary).
The forum concluded by expressing appreciation to the host, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, and the people of Oyo for their hospitality.
Among those present at the meeting were Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Peter Mbah (Enugu), as well as Deputy Governors from Akwa Ibom and Delta States.
The communiqué was signed by the forum’s chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed, on behalf of the attendees.
