Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to honour the legacy of the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu by implementing significant electoral reforms in Nigeria.

Nwosu, a former chairman of the now-defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), passed away in the United States on Friday, leaving behind a legacy marked by his oversight of Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as one of the fairest in the country’s history.

In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku expressed profound sadness over Nwosu’s death, describing him as a man of exceptional intellect whose contributions to Nigeria’s electoral system helped guide the nation through turbulent times.

The statement was signed by Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media adviser.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, noted that Nwosu’s innovative approaches in electoral management had a lasting impact, especially as he faced the unique challenges presented by the then-military government.

“Professor Nwosu was an embodiment of courage and dedication to democratic ideals, even at a time when such ideals faced relentless opposition. His death, particularly in a time when Nigeria continues to struggle with credible elections, reminds us of the necessity of honouring his legacy with tangible electoral reforms,” Atiku stated.

The June 12, 1993, election, won by the late Chief MKO Abiola, was later annulled by the military government, sparking national outrage and underscoring the need for a transparent and accountable electoral process. Nwosu’s role in organizing that election, often hailed as a benchmark in Nigeria’s democratic journey, remains a testament to his commitment to electoral integrity.

Atiku called on the government to establish lasting reforms in Professor Nwosu’s memory, as a tribute to his contributions. He emphasized that such reforms would not only honour Nwosu but also serve as a pathway toward credible elections in Nigeria.

The former Vice President also extended his condolences to the Nwosu family, expressing his hope for their comfort during this difficult period. He concluded his statement by praying for the peaceful repose of Nwosu’s soul, describing him as a “pillar of integrity” in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
