Students of the University of Ibadan, and other affected Universities in Oyo State have on Friday taken to the Ojoo-UI road as they protest school closure resulting from the ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The students who converged at their campus gate this morning marched down to the major roads which connects commuters moving from Ojoo to Sango, and vice versa.
The NATIONAL INSIGHT correspondent gathered that the students, who converged under the aegis of concerned students coalition, vowed to continue the protests, and also threatened to stop the upcoming primary elections until their demands would be met by the Federal Government.
The students held placards bearing various inscriptions like “Fund Education Now”, “Enough is Enough” “Education is not a Scam” among others, as they chanted “End ASUU Strike”. They equally seemed to be proceeding towards the Mokola Dugbe way as at the time of this report.
While speaking on the reason for this protest, a University Of Ibadan Student, Solomon expressed his utmost frustration towards this age long strike and the lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government, he then emphasized that the Students will not allow any election to take place without their resumption.
He said ” We’ll not be silent, we have waited too long, we will continue to protest, no primary election will hold till our demands are met”
Another student, Adewale Badejo also added his concern, He said
“We want to graduate. We have been stagnant for too long, FG should let hanging students graduate and move on with their lives”
Hence, to ensure a peaceful protest by the students and prevent it from being hijacked by hoodlums, DSS operatives, police personnel and Soldiers manned strategic locations around the institution’s main campus to provide security
NATIONAL INSIGHT recalls that ASUU extended its ongoing strike by another 12 weeks following what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to address the issues in contention between the two parties.
