The House of Representatives has passed for second reading of a Bill for an Act to establish federal polytechnic Ayede, Oyo state, to provide full time courses and other related matters.
Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, the sponsor, Hon Olusegun Odebunmi, said although the establishment of the Polytechnic has been declared by President Muhammadu Buhari, a legal framework is of high importance going by the principle of separation of power in a Constitutional Democracy like Nigeria’s.
Hon Odebunmi explained that the polytechnic will cover for the inadequacy to assimilate the teeming population of candidates seeking admission into higher institutions from states including but not limited to Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and other neighbouring States and beyond.
The lawmaker, who is representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal constituency and also chairman house committee on information, National Orientation ethics and values, stated that the Bill seeks to establish
a fund for the smooth administrative running of the Polytechnic, while the schedule lay down the guidelines for the proceedings of the Council meetings as applicable in the establishment Acts of other related Institutions in Nigeria.
He revealed a Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, statistics which indicates that candidates that applies for admission into Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso annually since 2018 keeps increasing from about 38,000 to 52,000, adding that the school can only admit not more than 10,000.
Odebunmi observed that the Bill will bring a lot of benefits to admission-seeking youths, the immediate community, the State and the entire nation by Contributing to even development in Oyo State.
The lawmaker, added that it will also take care of the shortfall in the education sector,provide a platform where trainers are getting trained and can stand shoulder high with their counterparts in other parts of Nigeria.
