The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State, Honourable Bimbo Adekanmbi, has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, to provide a detailed economic roadmap explaining how he intends to increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to ₦150 billion.
Adekanmbi, a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), described Alli’s projection as an attractive campaign promise that requires supporting data, economic assumptions and a verifiable implementation framework.
He also challenged the APC candidate to explain how the proposed revenue target could be achieved without introducing additional taxes, levies, permits and charges on residents and businesses.
In a press statement issued on Friday by Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Co-Director, Media and Publicity, Oyo State APM Campaign Council (OYSACC), Adekanmbi maintained that increasing government revenue should not automatically translate into additional financial burdens on citizens.
He argued that sustainable revenue growth should be driven by expanded economic activities, a wider tax net, improved compliance, investment promotion and the elimination of revenue leakages.
Adekanmbi cited the performance of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, stating that Oyo State’s monthly IGR had increased from approximately ₦1.7 billion when the governor assumed office in 2019 to about ₦8.7 billion currently.
According to him, the growth was achieved through deliberate reforms, improved revenue administration, technological innovation, economic expansion and efforts to eliminate leakages in the revenue collection system.
He further disclosed that the state’s annual IGR rose from ₦51.25 billion in 2023 to ₦65.29 billion in 2024, representing a 27.4 per cent increase.
The statement added that Oyo State generated ₦103.2 billion in 2025, crossing the ₦100 billion milestone for the first time, while generating ₦55.3 billion in the first six months of 2026.
The APM candidate maintained that these achievements demonstrated the impact of sustained economic reforms and disciplined revenue administration, insisting that the growth was recorded without imposing new taxes and punitive levies on traders, artisans, transport operators, market women and small business owners.
He consequently questioned the basis of Alli’s proposed ₦150 billion IGR target, noting that it would require almost ₦50 billion in additional annual revenue above the state’s current revenue level.
Adekanmbi challenged Alli to identify the economic sectors expected to generate the additional revenue, the investment opportunities that would drive growth, and the revenue leakages he intended to block.
He also demanded that the APC candidate disclose the economic projections and assumptions underpinning his target and explain how the proposed increase would be achieved without placing additional financial pressure on residents and businesses.
“If Senator Alli believes the additional revenue will come from economic growth, he should identify the sectors and provide the projections. If he believes it will come from investment, he should identify the investments and expected returns,” the statement said.
It added that if the proposed increase would come from improved revenue collection efficiency, Alli should explain the remaining leakages and their estimated value.
The APM candidate described the questions as issues of public accountability rather than partisan politics, arguing that voters deserved concrete policy proposals rather than campaign promises.
Contrasting the records of both candidates, Adekanmbi said the Makinde administration had demonstrated its capacity to grow the state’s revenue through measurable reforms, adding that he was committed to sustaining and improving on the achievements if elected governor in 2027.
He further criticised Alli’s candidacy, describing it as “rich in sensation but poor in substance”, and questioned whether the APC candidate had demonstrated the intellectual rigour and policy depth required to govern the state.
Adekanmbi maintained that the people of Oyo State deserved to know the figures, assumptions and implementation strategy behind every major economic promise before making their electoral choices.
The statement was signed by Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Co-Director, Media and Publicity, Oyo State APM Campaign Council, on November 6, 2026.
