Power Minister Tegbe Launches Africa Mini-Grids Programme to Electrify 20,000 Households

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has launched the Nigeria Pilot Project of the Africa Mini-Grids Programme (AMP), a major renewable energy initiative designed to expand access to electricity in underserved communities across the country.

The programme, implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), will deploy 23 mini-grids across 15 states, providing electricity to about 20,000 households and benefiting more than 50,000 Nigerians.

Speaking at the launch, Tegbe described the project as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive to deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to rural communities.

He said the initiative goes beyond powering homes, noting that in Namu, Plateau State, the mini-grids are already supporting agro-processing activities, boosting incomes and strengthening local economies.

According to the minister, renewable energy is not an alternative to the national grid but an integral part of Nigeria’s power architecture.
“We are deploying the right technology for the right community because every Nigerian deserves reliable, affordable power, wherever they live,” Tegbe said.

He disclosed that the second phase of the programme will deliver additional mini-grids to provide electricity to more than 50,000 households and micro-businesses across the country.

The minister also reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to improving electricity supply nationwide through simultaneous investments in the national grid and off-grid infrastructure.

“What was neglected for 50 years won’t be fixed in six months, but we are fixing it. We are rehabilitating the grid, building off-grid assets and strengthening the network. In a short while, Nigerians will see real improvements in electricity supply,” he said.

Tegbe added that the ongoing reforms are in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring reliable electricity access for all Nigerians.
