A former aspirant for the Oyo State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Hon. Shittu Wasiu Olorunsetemi, has declared his intention to join the Allied People’s Movement (APM), citing what he described as the denial of a free and fair contest within his former party.
Olorunsetemi made his position known during a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Iwajowa Local Government Area, Hon. Muritala Abiodun Oyewumi, alongside his supporters.
Speaking during the visit, the former APC aspirant said he had engaged in extensive consultations with his political associates and supporters before deciding to leave the APC for the APM.
According to him, remaining in a political environment where his contributions were allegedly not appreciated would amount to waiting in vain, stressing that his supporters had unanimously endorsed the move to the APM.
He stated that all necessary considerations had been made before taking the decision and pledged to work with other party members to ensure the success of the APM in future elections, particularly in 2027.
His supporters also commended the leadership style of the local government chairman, describing his performance and disposition as part of the factors that influenced their decision to align with the ruling party in the council area.
Welcoming the new entrants, Hon. Oyewumi and members of his political team assured Olorunsetemi of equal opportunities within the APM, saying the party provides an enabling atmosphere for members to achieve their political aspirations.
The council chairman described Olorunsetemi’s defection as a significant addition to the party, noting that his political experience and grassroots influence would strengthen the APM’s structure in Iwajowa Local Government.
Oyewumi further expressed confidence that the former APC aspirant would play a key role in advancing the fortunes of the party, adding that what appeared to be a setback in his former party could ultimately become a greater opportunity within the APM.
The development is expected to reshape political alignments in Iwajowa ahead of future electoral contests in Oyo State.
