Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has provided a fresh update on the efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted by bandits from schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities of Oriire Local Government Area, assuring residents that the victims remain the focus of ongoing security operations.
In his Newsletter No. 140 released on Friday, the governor noted that it has been 27 days since the students and teachers were forcefully taken from their schools, leaving families and communities in anguish and uncertainty.
Makinde acknowledged the pain of the affected families, saying that while he had repeatedly assured residents that the victims would be brought home safely, he understood that such assurances might appear less comforting as the days pass.
The governor, however, insisted that the state government and security agencies have not relented in their efforts, stressing that every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being taken to secure the release of the abductees.
According to him, intelligence reports indicate that the victims remain within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis, a vast area covering approximately 2,500 square kilometres across parts of 10 local government areas in Oyo State.
He explained that the size and terrain of the area present significant operational challenges, requiring patience, coordination and sustained efforts from security agencies.
Makinde urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615, assuring that all reports would be treated promptly.
He also cautioned against the spread of unverified information concerning the abduction, noting that misinformation could undermine ongoing rescue operations.
The governor appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies and praying for the safe return of the abducted students and teachers.
