Oyo Police Arrest Two Over Possession of 250 Live Cartridges

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of 250 live cartridges in a renewed crackdown on the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition across the state.

The suspects, identified as Ganiyu Sodiq, 35, and Salaudeen Sheriff, 23, both residents of Komu, were arrested on June 10, 2026, at Budo Pako in Oke-Oyan following intelligence-led surveillance operations by operatives of the command.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the suspects were found in possession of 250 live cartridges.

The statement noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects could not provide any lawful explanation for possessing the ammunition.

Further investigations, according to the police, suggest that the suspects may be involved in the illegal trafficking and supply of ammunition to criminal elements operating within and outside Oyo State.

“The ongoing intelligence-led investigation is focused on dismantling the wider network, identifying possible collaborators, and determining the source and intended destination of the recovered cartridges,” the statement said.

The suspects remain in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition, describing them as major enablers of violent crimes.

He assured residents that the police would continue to deploy all lawful measures to identify, apprehend and prosecute individuals involved in criminal activities.

The police commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies, stressing that community support remains crucial in the fight against crime and criminality.
