Former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, has been sentenced to a total of 75 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja over a N33.8 billion money laundering and fraud case.
The judgment came barely days after reports emerged that the former minister picked up a nomination form of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Delivering judgment, James Omotosho found Mamman guilty on all 12 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment on 10 counts, while counts four and five attracted separate jail terms of three years and two years respectively.
Justice Omotosho ruled that the sentences would run consecutively, meaning the convict would serve them one after another and not concurrently.
The judge further held that Mamman would not have the option of fines in place of imprisonment, except on count four, where he was given an option of a N10 million fine.
“The offences before the court involved large-scale abuse of public trust and financial misconduct,” the judge stated.
The court also ordered the permanent forfeiture of assets linked to the former minister, including foreign currencies recovered during investigations and four high-value properties in Abuja said to have been acquired with proceeds of the illegal transactions.
The EFCC described the judgment as a major boost to Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, insisting that the ruling showed that public office holders could be held accountable for financial crimes.
Mamman served as Minister of Power under former President Muhammadu Buhari before leaving office amid investigations into alleged financial irregularities in the power sector.
